In 1944 a B24 took off on a test flight from Olmstead Air Base in Middletown. Onboard, were 4 soldiers and 2 civilian workers. The B24 engine caught fire just after take off. The plane then crashed into a field in Etters Pennsylvania, just outside of Yocumtown. One civilian electrician, Norman Shuey, managed to put on a parachute (that he never received training with) and jumped head first out of the bomb bay doors! He then attempted to pull bodies from the crash. Afterwards, he returned to work….
